How much does it cost to learn to drive in the UK?

Driving lesson prices vary across the UK and can range from anywhere around £20 to £45 per hour depending on the region and the transmission type i.e. manual or automatic. Lessons in an automatic transmission are generally higher however you tend to require fewer lessons. The average price for lessons in a manual car is around £30 per hour with cheaper options available block pricing of 10, 20, 30, 40 or more hours depending on the driving school.

The best driving instructors rarely lower their pricing as they are well aware of their worth and the high standard of service they provide. Unfortunately, I have seen it too often, clients having spent over 20 hours with an instructor only to realise they weren’t learning much until it was too late. I would always paying per class initially before committing to a block of hours, this way you can get to know your instructor and decide if you are happy and comfortable with their method of teaching before investing any more time and money. Refund processes are always time consuming so are better avoided in the first place.

Always do you research before committing to driving instructor, ask for recommendations from friends, colleagues or associates. Taking your time to do a bit of research online, reading reviews and recommendations will prove to save a lot of time and money going with the wrong instructor. It’s better to be patient and wait for the right instructor by either registering on a waiting list or checking in regularly for availability than to go with whatever is available at the time due to desperation.

I would suggest planning carefully before starting any lessons.  Do not start lessons if you’re unable to complete the full course as taking a break will only hinder your progress and end up costing you more overall.
