How many lessons does it take to drive?

According to the statistics from the DVSA, most pupils pass their test after completing an average of 45 hours of training and 22 hours of private practice. However, this differs from person to person depending on one’s learning and physical abilities. My clients usually pass after doing an average of 45 - 55 hours of lessons.

I have had clients who were ready for their test after only 30 hours of training, and on the other end of the scale there were students who needed more than 80 hours (very rare though), It would all depend how you take to it, you may have a natural ability to drive with lots of confidence or you may need a few more extra hours to build up your skills if you’re a nervous driver. Either way it’s always best to take your time and go for test when you and your instructor both feel you’re ready.  Taking for your test before you’re can have a demoralizing impact if you don’t pass and can lead to a progressive build up anxiety each time you go for a test.

I would suggest planning carefully before starting any lessons.  Don’t start lessons if you’re unable to complete the full course as taking a break in-between will hinder your progress and end up costing you more in the long run.

A good instructor will always be considerate of your objectives and should update you on your progress every step of the way to help you better plan and prepare.
