How do I start learning to drive?

The first thing you want to do is apply for your provisional drivers license, you can do this via filling in a form from your post office however it is easier to apply for it online. You can start your lessons when you are 17 years old.

The next steps would be to find a good instructor in your area. Things to consider are:

1. Are they certified? Certified instructors can be found on the DVSA website and are the most reliable.

2. Do they have a good reputation and reliable? Its always best to do a lot of research and shop around before committing to anyone. References, recommendations and word of mouth are usually the most reliable so ask your friends and colleagues for recommendations. Don’t rule out taking lessons with an instructor who doesn’t cover your region, taking a train or a bus to go to a good instructor may be inconvenient however it will be more cost effective in the long run get you the best value for you money.

3. Are you comfortable with them? Communication is key when going with an instructor, its always good for both parties to have a call before anything to discuss learning abilities and goals. Its best to just try an instructor out and pay per lesson at first to get to know your instructor before committing to more expensive block lessons. Having a good rapport with your instructor makes each lesson more enjoyable and goes faster so to speak. Don’t be afraid to change instructors if you feel you are not progressing.

Once you have found a suitable instructor you should work towards a prepared schedule and syllabus tailored to your skills level. This usually starts with teaching you car control in a ‘nursery area’ to build up your confidence before taking you onto busier roads. Driving schools may differ in their teaching structure so its important you ask as many questions beforehand to get an understanding of the training format and avoid any disappointment in expectations.
