When should you start driving lessons in Glasgow?
You can legally start driving lessons at 17 years old, though you can apply for your provisional licence from age 15 years and 9 months — meaning you can have your licence ready and lessons booked in almost as soon as you turn 17.
You can find full official details on the Gov.uk website.
When Learners Typically Start
Many learners choose to begin lessons as soon as they turn 17, whether for personal independence or commuting reasons. Others wait until it becomes a genuine necessity — for example, a job that requires a driving licence.
My Recommendation
In my experience, it's always better to get your licence as early as you're able to afford it. Having a licence and not needing it immediately is far better than needing one urgently and not having it — waiting until a licence becomes a pressing requirement puts significant pressure on passing your test within a tight timeframe, which rarely leads to the best learning experience or outcome.
Starting early also means:
No time pressure — you can progress at a natural pace rather than rushing toward a deadline
Lower stress levels — nervous drivers especially benefit from not having a ticking clock
Flexibility around test centre waiting times — since Glasgow test centres currently have waits of several months, starting lessons early gives you a head start on the whole process
