Do I Need to Pass My Theory Test Before Starting Practical Lessons?

No — in the UK, you don't need to pass your theory test before starting practical driving lessons. You can begin practical lessons as soon as you have a valid provisional driving licence.

However, you do need to pass your theory test before you can book or take your practical driving test. Many instructors, myself included, recommend starting practical lessons and theory revision around the same time, since they reinforce each other — understanding road signs, hazard perception, and rules of the road in theory makes practical lessons click faster, and vice versa.

What This Means in Practice

  • Provisional licence — the only requirement to start practical lessons.

  • Theory test — must be passed before booking your practical test (not before starting lessons).

  • Recommended approach — begin practical lessons early, then aim to pass your theory test a few weeks to a couple of months in, once you're comfortable with the basics and ready to start thinking about booking your practical test.

  • Theory test validity — once passed, your theory test certificate is valid for 2 years, so there's no benefit to passing it too far in advance of being test-ready.

My Recommendation for Glasgow Learners

I typically advise students to start practical lessons straight away and begin theory revision in parallel — this way, you're building real driving experience from day one rather than delaying, while still giving yourself plenty of time to prepare for the theory test before you're ready to book your practical.
